After years away from it, I decided to get back into axolotls again. I have more time to dedicate to it now as I am home so much!! Also have dogs, guinea pigs and a betta though looking for a pair of bettas and also aquatic frogs. This is one of the best hobbies ever and my five year old grandson is also very intrigued so I have a partner in crime. :)

I think it will be a lot of fun with him. I brought it up when I saw him yesterday, he was excited, and in addition, two granddaughters, ages 6 and 7 are wanting to "help" as well.:)

Hello from Minnesota as well! I'm very interested in getting into the hobby, but it's difficult up here because there is NOTHING.

Hello and welcome! I’m a Minnesotan, too.

There are local expos in the Twin Cities with decent selection. They tend to have a lot of axolotls.

Good luck!

I would love to get to one of the expos in the Twin Cities!

Keep an eye out on the Craiglist ads for the Twin Cities, and on Facebook. I THINK they hold one each spring, summer and fall.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
