Hi,
I'm new to the forum. I just got into newt keeping. Found a girl selling Spanish ribbed newt hatchlings and decided to try them out (after researching of course). They are now about 9 weeks old and doing great!
I'm from Toronto and it's pretty hard trying to find newts around here. Would love to get my hands on fire bellied newts but haven't been successful......looking forward to learning more through this forum..

I can't believe that it's so hard to get fire-belly-newts in north america (although I know it's true). According to Salamanders: Keeping and Breeding, by Pasmans, Bogaerts, Janssen, & Sparreboom (2014), 2.3 millions has been imported to the U.S. between 2001 and 2009. Where have all those animals gone?
Where I am from you get imported animals for 10 € and captive bred ones for 12 € all year 'round in fish stores. At this price difference it's definitely worth buying the captive bred newts.

But spanish ribbed newts and fire belly newts are equally fun and easy to keep. You will have a great joy to care for them. ;)

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
