i have 2 axolotls that have recently been moved to a four foot tank and so their old two foot tank is empty and i really want to use it as a terrarium. I cannot decide between newts or salamanders, but am swaying more towards a salamander every day.
terrarium needs to be fairly light(ish) so preferably a species that doesnt need more than an inch or two of water (or just a dish).
I really like the look of Tiger salamanders and fire salamanders, but have read that they grow quite large. (how quickly do they grow?)
Any ideas on a smaller species or perhaps an unusual newt....? (and if possible a good place to buy them?!)

Geo and IanR, please use the PM system.

A single tiger or fire sal could live happily in a tank that size. Raising some terrestrial juveniles is another option that will let you watch them grow.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
