This newly recognized Hynobius species, long confused with H.leechi, is described in Zoological Science, a journal published by the Zoological Society of Japan:

Tim, do you have any update on this? Does it have a name? Has it been officially published?

Hi Jen, I can't answer your specific questions immediately but I do in fact have in my possession some more recent information on this. I just hadn't posted it because I didn't detect an incredible amount of interest in the original post above

Now that you've proven to me that the masses are indeed awake, alert and hungry for info, here it is:

And Jennewt, don't bother to inquire about the scientific name that's been chosen for Japan's new Akaishi Salamander because I'm sworn to secrecy

I haven't told a soul, not even my wife...not that she'd care to know

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
