It is my first time keeping these pets and i am not sure if there gills are meant to get darker?
When i got pebbles her gills were very light and now they are quite a deep pink. Is that a good sign?

Hello pink angel

Yes your axolotl is fine. The gills of an axolotl go deep red/pink because of blood circulation, when a axolotl is active or has been active the blood rushes through the body causing the gills to go darker. Its perfectly normal and a good sign that your axolotl is getting sufficient exercise.

Thank you for your question.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
