I have an axolotl named brucey.. Its actually a she but we didnt realize this until after we named her. for nearly 2 weeks she has not eaten anything. she is usually a good eater. she is really skinny and her colour is changing to darker. She is still active swims round the tank etc. i am really worried and want to fix her.. does any one know what may be her problem, i recently looked after my sisters male axolotl but he has gone back to my sisters house, they were in the same tank, could she be depressed cos of the seperation?

Hi there Rachele, when you say 'really skinny' can you provide a photo? Even a photo taken from a phone will do, just so that the forum can determine the extent.
Not eating for nearly two weeks is not really a problem with a cold-blooded animal, although in human terms it sounds awfull, it may be just re-adjusting to different circumstances in its surroundings.
What colour type is the axolotl? A photo would help no-end ;)
(Axolotls aren't 'social' animals as such, but a difference in the behaviour or mood since the other axie left will often be, curiously, a focus for anthropomorphism.
I must add that I am regularly in conversation with the different caudates I share my house with!)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
