How does everyone here fight algae. I have a 10 gallon tank with some elodea, java moss, some moss of an unkown species and one java fern. I also have a sponge filter and 6 small dobro larvae. I have a 24 inch flourescent light. I have it on usually 4-8 hours a day. Is that too long? Is that too long? I often see beautul planted tanks with no algae on the glass and I dont know people do it. Please tell me your secrets!
 
My tools and methods include:
  • Long handled paint brush (the kind designed for painting behind radiators)
  • Algae scraper with razor blade holder
  • Plastic kitchen scourer
  • Regular water changes
  • Vigilant spot cleaning
  • Low light
  • Avoid removing all algae - leave it growing in discreet places

Also note that tanks go through various algae "phases" depending on their age. Different types of algae will appear at different times depending on the maturity of the tank. Don't give up on a tank just because it has algal blooms. With proper maintenance it will settle down over a few months.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
