Okay so this is just something i was wondering about but i have two axolotls one almost jet black the other lighter and brighter. i thought they were both wild type and now im wondering if one is amel.
 
I'm not sure what amel is but if you attach some photos we can see what kind of axies they are :)
 
okay i think what i meant was melanistic which as i understand is much blacker than wild types and as you can hopefully see one is much darker than the other

Check the eyes under some light. If the eyes reflect they are wild type, if there is no reflection then it is a melanistic :)
 
Yup, the easiest way to check is the eyes.
Melanoids have no iradophores, they won't have any shiny bits in the pattern, no gold in the eyes, and probably no or minimal markings.
My girl Bone is a melanoid, my boy Charm is a wild type.
You can easily see the gold in Charm's eyes vs the lack of pigment on Bone.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
