My 25+ year old barred tiger salamander has quickly developed a large black spot on his head. It wasn't there a week ago. I've read through several FAQs and articles on this site but most fungal/bacterial infections seem to be fuzzy and/or white which doesn't match what I'm seeing. The herpetologist at Woodland Park Zoo sent me a link for saline bath treatment. There is a vet in my county that can examine him and take a culture. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should do first? I'm attaching photos of the spot. Thank you.

I would honestly take it to the vet. It is hard to identify or treat illnesses like this if your not an expert, so that is the best choice.
