Thyroxin is levothyroxin - a thyroid hormone supplement used to treat hypothyroidism. It would make sense that a diet rich in levothyroxin would cause metamorphing. If I recall Stebbins amphibian book discusses levothyroxin inducing/ being needed to induce morphing.

to make thyroxin you need iodine, therefore either the diet needs high iodine(so it can be made) or thyroxin(which can be used directly). i would guess that feeding a diet high in thyroxin would increase the body's levels more as it is direct, wheras the body would only convert as much iodine into thyroxin as it thinks it needs- wheras we're trying to force the matter. that's only my thoughts though...i'm willing to be corrected!

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
