Hi Caudata,

I'm hoping someone can help diagnose what could be wrong with my axolotl.

She is extremely skinny even though she is eating the earthworms that I feed her. She was living in a tank with two other axolotls that are doing just fine but it seems that my girl is not gaining any weight even though she is eating and now she is missing part of her tail. She is also missing her gills. I've moved her to a serrate tank to isolate her and figure out what could be wrong.

Can anyone please help with understanding what could potentially be causing this? I'm at my wit's ends trying to figure out what could be issue.

Please let me know if you need any additional information from me that could be useful.

Thank you so much!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
