Can anyone help. my 18 month old axolotl "Sam" stopped eating and became very swollen 8 weeks ago. I took him to the vets who diagnosed either a parasite or ascites and treated him with a diuretic and flagyl after a week he got better and was great for about a month, then he went off his food and started swelling again, so I took him back to the vets and the treatment was repeated, he seemed to get better for a few days and started to eat again but has now stopped eating altogether and is very swollen, has anyone encounted this before and have any advice to offer. Ok Linda, the first thing I am going to ask you is what substrate are you keeping your axolotl on?

Is the swelling all over or is it just the belly area.
Something we all love to see on Caudata is a photograph of the axolotl . Sometimes this can help greatly in helping to diagnose a problem. If you could post a picture that would be great.

What have you been feeding Sam?
Do you carry out regular water changes and how much water do you remove each time?
Do you add any chemicals to your tank water?
I hope we can help you, you've come to the right place....Good luck!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
