There appear to be several different "varieties" or possibly species/subspecies of T. verrucosus. They behave differently. Some will remain aquatic after metamorphosis.

I am raising some "light" colored form of verrucosus. They will not stay in water until several months after metamorphosis. I keep them in a semiaquatic tank, but most of them stay on the islands.

Hi Jennifer, nice to meet you!

How to ID the T.verrucosus is "light" or "Dark" colored form ??? Is that the picture showed as the following link which is the light form of verrucosus???

John's is "the" dark form and Ralf's is a lighter form(I believe..). I don't think anything has been published defining the "forms".

Yes the different "forms" are just speculation. You will have to try different setups and see how your animals behave.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
