Hey well i set up a new tank. what kind of plnts should i use? Live or plastic, or both. If l use live is there a certain kind.

i would suggest the use of Silk plants, they are softer then plastic, and look alot nicer

real plants, like any living thing, need food, and light.

Silk plants = easiest nicest option

If you enter this forum there is a search function on the right hand side of the page and if you type in "live plants" you'll find a lot of posts relevant to your question.

But the use of live or plastic is just a personal choice.

Live plants require lights, that axolotls don't care for. I do my best to keep my plant lights on for only a few hours each day and the axolotls have the option of hiding from the light if it bothers them.

I"ve done artificial set ups and now live - I like both - just depends on my mood.

Hi Dorian,

I'm actually a big fan of plastic plants in an axolotl tank because most aquarium plants you will find need much more light and much warmer temperatures than axolotls like. If you really want something living, though, and you have enough ambient light in the room where your aquarium is, you could try Java moss and Java fern to start out with.

Congratulations on your new tank, too!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
