Im thinking about buying two baby Axolotls, this is a rough image i found off google of what they would look like since i don't have a photo on me

I've wanted to care for 2 baby Axolotls but i've heard since they are fairly young they tend to cannibalise each other, any suggestions on whether i should buy two or stick with one or if there is no problem with keeping two would be great
( my tank is around 45cm or 17.7inch )

Just put a divider. Once they grow to their full size they should be fine. But in reality, you only really need one as axolotls aren't ''social'' animals. They're actually quite primitive. So two of them would be purely for your enjoyment, and everyone else's :)

This is just my opinion, I think that it will better if you purchase one Axolotl then once everything turns out fine then you can add a new one.

I was new to axolotls and I rescued 2 juveniles from a breeder who did not separate the little guys. She had about 50 in a large plastic container. The axolotls were about 7 weeks old and most if not all had their limbs all or partial eaten by their brothers and sisters. I initially had "Dim and Sum" in a 2.5 gallon tank then moved them to a 10 gallon tank and now a 55 gallon tank. I fed them as much as they would eat 2 or 3 times a day, so they would not snap at each other. There was still the old bite but no damage real damage.

Dim and Sum are now about 8 inches long and doing well. Accept Sum did never regrow one of his front arms and remains a tripod. It makes him easier to tell apart from Dim.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
