Last night I thought I heard a chirping noise coming from my salamander tank which is next to my bed. I have a CB pair of blue-spotted salamanders (at least thats what they were sold to me as, but from looking at the photos in my Audubon book they look more like Tremblay's). I have read online that Tiger Sals can make a noise, so I was wondering, maybe I'm not completely crazy? I have had them for about 3 years now and have never heard anything. However, I have noticed slightly more natural behaviors since moving them to a naturalistic terrarium (plants, springtails, sow bugs, lots of hides, and a water feature) this last summer. Has anyone ever heard of other Ambystomatids making noise? If so, is there a reason they would make this noise now?

One of them probably bit the other's tail. It's pretty common for a variety of caudates to make sounds when picked up, for example. They tend to sound a bit like a really wonky chewing toy...

Oh no! No tail biting allowed! Thanks for the response. I should have known it was probably something silly they were doing and not something more significant like courtship; I understand it can be quite tricky to breed these guys, but I can still dream =D.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
