Where can I find slate for the bottom of the tank?

I've been to two Home Depot's and to Lowes and none of them have slate rock.
 
You should be able to find what you need at a stone yard- someplace that carries brick, stone, stone veneer, etc.
 
Other places that will have it:

-Garden center stores that specialize in landscaping, plants, renting out gardening tools.
-Aquarium/fish stores often sell slate for decoration, although they tend to charge a little more than garden centers.

Home Depot and generalist home improvement stores tend to only carry some things seasonally.

I bought mine at Rona, but that is here in Canada. If you do go to a hardware store, sometimes it is with tiles, back-splashes, or even siding. You need to make sure it is JUST natural slate though, no caulking or anything holding it together and no adhesives.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
