How are the quality of axoltls (and other specimens sold) bought from a biological supply center, such as Niles or Wards compared from the specimens collected from breeders? Are there any major drawbacks, etc. acquiring the specimens in any of these manners?
I never mail order for living specimens, but is mortality rate hight in mail order axoltols? Besides the acquisition of the specimen being completely impersonal, what sort of pros/cons are associated with mail order specimens compared to, lets say, driving down the street to acquire a specimen from an aquarium specialist or breed?
Also, besides for laboratory study have there been attempts to breed any other neonetic ambystoma from Mexico? Where can one acquire material about genetics in regard to hybridization of axolotl with these other closely related species? Conservation and genetics are very interesting topics, especially studies in areas such as hybridization and rare colour patterns.
Thanks,
AnnMarie
