hi,
I have recently bought a tiger salamander from a local reptile pet shop and he has been at my house for 2 months now. i went away for a week and left my brother looking after him and i got a phone call to say he has not been eating. when i got home he ate one meal worm and hasnt eaten since. i am really worried about him because it has now been 2 weeks since he ate properly and i dont know if im imagining it but he seems to be getting skinnier.
Help! i have tried to coax him into eating the worms but he just turns away from them or walks away. because he is not eating the worms he is also not getting the calcium i put with his worms once a week. ( advise from the pet shop owner) i am worried he will die if i do nothing, yet all the vets in my area take one look at him and say they are not specialised enough to deal with anphibians!!!!

Advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can you tell us how you have been housing the salamander? What temperatures is it exposed to? The more information and detail you provide the better others can offer help and suggestions.
If you haven't read through the care sheet I would strongly recommend you do so.

Good luck to you and your salamander!

What kind of foods are you offering?

2 weeks is not an excessive amount of time to go without food.

Maybe try some other food. Mine loved crickets for a while but then I started feeding him worms and now he wont go near crickets.maybe trying something else will help

I'd agree trying a different food. One of mine is greedy and eats anything waved in her face whereas the other turns her nose up at anything other than crickets most of the time.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
