How long does it take for gills to grow back? I put my 5 inch axolotl in a tank that was not cycled as i was not educated about cycling. I found out about it after about 2 weeks of having her in the tank while it was cycling. When i took her out and tubbed her the water was at ammonia: 0.25 ppm, Nitrite: 5.0 ppm, Nitrate: 80 ppm. She had not eaten for days and her gills were so bad. They had lost their color, lost a few tips, lost all of the fluffy stuff around them, and completely stress curled. It has been 11 days of her being tubbed and she is back to her old self, full of energy, eating, etc. All but her gills. They have shown no improvment at all. Is she going to be like this for the rest of her life? Or will they eventually be back to the way they were?

There's not a strict rule on how long it takes to regenerate. When my axolotl had gill issues it did take a few months for them to improve. Keeping the water cool and clean will give it the best chance to regrow properly :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
