So before anyone lectures me, I am an absolute beginner at genetics. Lets just say someone didn't do all that great in that unit in middle school bio. I have a copper mel, confirmed het copper, from leucistic and mel parents, both also het copper. I bought him from a breeder but she confirmed this. I am also interested in a melanoid who's hets I am unaware of. If I were to breed these two, would I get any copper mels/coppers? And if anyone has some good up to date articles on the basics of genetics when it comes to axolotls that would be great too! Thanks :)

Since the copper gene is recesive, you will not get coppers unless the malenoid is also het for copper.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
