I recently went on vacation and had someone watch over my cat and fish, when I came back half of his gills are gone. Not sure what to do, I’ve been doing water changes daily and have been trying to get him to eat but he is clearly not happy. Any help would be great I don’t know what to do or what’s happening.

Poor little guy. :( Looks like he may have some ammonia burns as well. Doing some water changes will help with that and putting him in the fridge for a bit will help him feel better and jumpstart his healing. You could also add an Indian almond leaf to his tank. They have antibacterial properties and can help soothe an axie's skin. I wish you the best of luck!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
