Hello, my axolotl is turning 8 this year. He lives in a 20 gallon tank and I do 25%-35% weekly water changes. His diet is earth worms a few times a week. He let's me know when he's hungry. He has no substrate in the bottom of his tank. All parameters we're normal last I checked.

A few days ago, his cloaca region became immensley swollen on one side. The tip of his tail curled in as well. He's been in the fridge for 3.5 days now with 33% water changes done twice a day with a turkey baster to reduce stress. He has only pooped itty bitty amounts, no real poop at all. But his tail is no longer curled and his gills look great. His back end has me extremely worried! Any advice as to what to do?

That looks like a really bad prolapse and will require vet treatment.

Let us know how he goes!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
