this is my first time keeping terrestrial sallies . I want their home to be as comfortable as possible . I have a large aquarium ,but so far i have only used large rounded pebbles ,moss ,and water one cm in depth . I am concerned about low pH if I use hummus based covering .

One of the great things about Salamandra is that they're quite forgiving when it comes to how they're kept. As long as they're kept moist and relatively cool (less than the early 20s <SUP>o</SUP>Celsius/ less than early 70s <SUP>o</SUP>F) they tend to do well.

Their natural habitat is the forest floor, and since that's usually covered in decaying organic matter, it tends to be a little acidic. Terrestrial salamanders need to be relatively tough when it comes to pH, so don't worry about it.

The water is unnecessary as long as you keep the tank moist - they don't enter the water in the wild, except to give birth.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
