Haaai, I'm new here, I'm a 15 year old girl living in California (I consider my hometown Casper, Wyoming) moving to either Utah or Arizona at the end of October of this year. I've got two cats and I'm carefully researching what I would need to get an Axolotl. Tank, decoration, substrate, the Axolotl itself and water isn't really an issue, but I'm curious about the prices of food, such as earthworms, frozen tubifex worm cubes, blackworms, whiteworms, brine shrimp, out of all the possible foods for an Axolotl what would be most nutritious as well as cheap?
I get $10 a week in allowance and plan on getting a job when I turn 16.

First off, welcome to the forum. The best food for axies is mostly free and that would be worms. Come winter time when you would probably have to buy earthworms you can get them from any Wal-mart or local bait shop for around $3.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
