Thank you for the reply. What wonderful news to know that giant chinese salamanders are in a far better shape than they were years ago

Large numbers of Andrias continue to be taken from the wild, resulting in them being largely exterminated from most of their range. In addition, new data shows there have been probably at least 7 separate species of Andrias in China. Several have been hybridized in captivity, more than one has been released outside its natural range, and at least one is ONLY known from captive samples. Chinese "farming" of Andrias is a conservation disaster - hybridization, extralimital introductions, laundering of WC specimens, and continued illegal overharvest.

These are very cool. That is upsetting to hear about the way the conservation has been treated but I am glad they are receiving increasing attention. Hopefully the increased attention will lead to better practices. Maybe down the road they will be plentiful and available in the states. I would love to have a pond and keep a couple of these in it.

That is very interesting that these are sold for the pet trade because I hear they are the largest of the Andrias. I could never keep one, but out of curiousity how big of tank would be needed to keep a fully grown one? Thanks for posting.
