Once again I discovered 9 strauchii eggs in their tank this morning while doing a water change. This is without putting them through any kind of a cooling period. This happened once before but the eggs were infertile. The temperature in their tank was 66F, I'm so hoping the eggs are good. Some of the eggs are a solid black color and some are a gray color. Does the difference in color mean that some of them are developed more than others? I immediately jury-rigged a device I hope will cool the temperature in the tank to a degree that will promote their egg-laying. I used an old drinking water cooler, a small water pump, and a coil from a water distiller.

Congrats!!! None of the eggs that successfully developed here turned black. My females did lay some in water temps that warm, but none ever developed. The eggs that did develop were laid no warmer than about 62F. Best of luck, they are great newts!!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
