Today during I changed pliant loam, moss, leaves and bark I remove the little Terrestris in a separate box, put theirs mama thereto for a picture. Hopefully a friend is coming soon with a good camera, so I promise to send more and better pictures - also from other Terrestris mamas with littles,

Bare in mind that when the larvae are deposited they are substantially smaller and less bulky. Mind you, they must get huuuuuuge anyway with so many embryos.
I can´t wait for the day i finally get to have a nice breeding group of this species, i just love them.
Gorgeous animals, thanks for sharing!

spectacular!
I'm interested in the orange form: is that a real rare one in nature? I remember finding many many terrestris in the woods as a kid, but never one that was orange or red.

What's the genetics on it? In order for orange Mama to have all orange babies, does she have to mate with an orange Papa? In other words, is it a recessive gene?

AW: Re: Big mama Terrestris

big mama weighed pregnant 64gr(picture) and each of the 49 larvas had 1,37inch(3,5cm picture). The birth lasted from 21.04. - 12.05. The metamorphose 07.06. - 20.06. Five larvas died during four weeks.
Twenty years ago it was a great experience when I saw the first red Terrestris in nature. Probably the gene is recessive - the population is approximately 1000 and thereof 1%-3% red/orange/tricolor. It's bare possibility that red-red mate, because red-red is dominant, than the population must have circa 10%-20% red.
Red-yellow is recessive and by Mendelson at least a quater red in the next generation, I am no scientist, hopefully they know more about this miracle,
The third mama was together with a red and a orange male (pictures),

Re: AW: Re: Big mama Terrestris

that's fascinating. Do the orange/red ones only occur in one population or do you find them throughout the range of terrestris?

If I found a red terrestris in nature I think I would die of bliss and ascend straight to heaven.

the red color occur less of 1% in Europe, exclusive Gallaicas. But its not documented. I heard about a population in the east where are more red than yellow...I love the yellow all the same...

There´s a difference between the red of gallaica and other subspecies and the erythristic individuals found in terrestris, fastuosa, etc.
The former have red as part of their normal coloration. There is variation between populations and individuals but largely you can say that all gallaica have some red, just as morenica.
However, what you find in terrestris, and fastuosa too, are erythristic individuals. The mutation appears to be more common in high altitudes and as far as i can tell it seems to be recessive, but i don´t know for sure. It can be locally abundant in some specific populations but it´s usually very rare.

These pictures are amazing. One day I want a pair of these guys, I'm currently cut of buying animals....I guess 2 Tiger Salamanders, an Axolotl, and a Turtle are too many animals for some. I think that there is always more room for more aquariums!
