Females can have a very little crest aswell, as i found with my Triturus carnifex. A picture of the cloaca may better help sexing the animal.

Looks more like a female to me. The males' crests are generally a few mm tall even outside of breeding, they will have an obvious white stripe on the tail year round as well.

A male of that size should have gotten a crest by now. Animals get sexually mature within a year most of the time and this animal looks it's passed that stage already. It's either a female (sure looks like one) or a maldeveloped male.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
