Krill as a Staple? Final Word on 3M Colored Quartz?

Hi, Gang!
I've been keeping my totally cool golden albino axie at work now for over 5 weeks. He/she's fed primarily frozen krill from forceps with an occasional pellet from the U. of Kentucky axolotl colony or Hikari sinking carnivore pellets (eats like a fiend). Is there a verdict on longterm effects of krill as a staple? Also, I've been following thread re: 3M colored quartz. Now that some of you've been using it awhile, what's the verdict? Thanks!

id use the pellets from the axolotl colony as your staple. i dont know anything about the krill though sorry!

Samuel - I have had the 3m color quartz in a 20 gallon tank for a few months now. I don't have axolotls in that tank (yet) but I have used it as a temporary tank for some fish and shrimp.

It is light and non-packing and even snails leave trails when they move through it. I am able to use a gravel vacuum on it, I was not able to use a gravel vacuum on the moon sand I use in my axolotl tank.

It has no adverse problems that I have noticed using it with the fish and shrimp. I will leave it in there when I move my male axolotls to that tank. I wouldn't advise using the white color like I did. It does not clean up as well as I had hoped it would.

As far as the krill feeding goes, I am not sure of the long term effects of krill perhaps someone else knows and will post on it.

I would recommend maybe feeding a bit more variety adding night crawlers, gut loaded crickets, and more of the pellets from the axolotl colony.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
