Hi guys!
Beginner here.
Any comments on my tank/set-up or axxies most welcome.

Q- Oro, my beige/gold axxie, he's actually a white one 'tanned' ....right?

F.Y.I - Axle is the sluggish one who cant even really catch his food if I drop it right on him, whereas Oro is spritely and gave me my first nip! Oro loves to swim around the filter outlet and be 'pushed' a little down again by the water. Dont worry the tank is big enough so that there is no current on one side of the tank.... but he seems to like it. Axle has beautiful gills tho that dont really show up in the pics. Oro's gills seem to be growing a bit since I got him. Not in length but the filaments are now more even on them. I think he had most of them bitten off before I got him.

Let me know what u think! I'll be adding more plants soon.

Regards,
Mel

Lovely photos. I like the unusually coloured 'tan' one.

More hiding places will be good!

Indeed Rayson the tan one is lovley :)
You may want to think about changing the substrate from the small pebbles to either very large rocks or sand. Axies can suck up the small pebbles when they eat, this can cause a large range of problems for axolotls. As Rayson said more hiding places would be good, sometimes they like a bit of me time away from each other. There is a range of thing you can get for your axies to hide in, im using a tetra hide for lizards. Its quiet big and takes up 1 end of my tank, but my axie loves it :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
