I recently went to Mexico for a week and left my two axies with a family friend to watch them. When I returned my 6 month old male leaucistic was absolutely gigantic. I’ve never had any problems before their water quality is pristine and I left clear guidelines on feeding them (two worms every other day) and cleaning the tank. The tank is at a constant 18 Celsius. I’m going to try fridging him tomorrow and see if that helps although I’m not sure what could cause the problem since I have a pretty fine sand substrate. His tail is slightly lifted which give me the impression he could have some blockage going on. His gills are also slightly curled and he’s been refusing to eat for about 5 days now. (Photo attached to prove he is male so pregnancy is out of the question)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
