Hi all,

My lil axie has a nasty rash I can’t get rid of. He is 12 years old. About a month ago he was in a tank with a bad filter. Someone else was taking care of him and didn’t notice how bad his water was. I noticed he had a red rash around his gills, legs, and belly. I changed the filter and cleaned his tank and hoped it would improve. Over the next couple weeks it was stable. I moved states and he was under some stress with that. In the last week he’s been settled but the rash is not improving. Otherwise he is behaving normally, eating every 2-3 days, normal activity. The rash is red (see photos) and does not appear fungal. He developed some swelling over the last two days. I tried salt bath x 2 yesterday but I got nervous and now I’m at the vet, hoping to get him some antibiotics. Have others seen infection like this before?? Will he be ok??

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
