Meet Lieutenant Colonel. Boots. I think she may be getting a little bit sick, her gills don't seem to be curving in that bad but her tail does not look right, it seems to have a kind of wavy curve rather than being straight near the end of the tail and she looks pale. How bad is it? This is my first Axo, shes about 7-9 months old.

Also, is it possible to post images on here?

Hi and welcome!

It is possible to post images. When making a post, there should be the option "manage attachments" underneath the part where you're writing.
From the description alone it's hard to tell if the Colonel is sick or just a little bit weird. Could be both. Most axolotls are a little bit weird :happy:

Here are some pictures! I took the rocks out of the tank as I think it was making the water too hard, and replaced all the filter attachments hoping that would help it.

Oh, this looks like a case of "weird" to me, instead of "sick".


I could be wrong of course, but the Lieutenant looks healthy enough. The wavy tail could be because of something that happened in her first few weeks, or just something she was born with.

If she eats and poops alright and doesn't seem stressed she should be just fine.



If you want to be (more) sure, you can test the water parameters, see if those are OK.

From what I have seen, she poops normally and gets VERY excited when she sees me reach for her food from the fridge. I have been feeding her a small bloodworm cube one in the morning and one at night, but now have started her on one bloodworm in the morning and one brine shrimp at night. Her tank does not have any substrate and she seems to turn sideways when she tries to move. Should I get her some sand for the bottom to ease stress? I was just unsure if she was sick or not. Otherwise, she seems to like to play, nip at my fingers, and swim around lots

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
