Hi guys and gals,

My name is Michael, I am from South Louisiana. I have kept tiger salamanders, axolotls, and newts in the past as well as several freshwater fish and saltwater fish and corals, but I am far from an expert in any of the afore mentioned animals' care. That is one of the reasons I joined this group many years ago. I got out of amphibian keeping for a while when I became more interested in saltwater aquariums and saltwater fish. I also got to the point where I was keeping too many animals and attempting to maintain too many tanks, so I chose to focus on the saltwater aquarium alone. I am just now at a point where my interest in amphibians, specifically newts and salamander species (although I hold nothing against frogs haha), is peaking again. I am hoping to keep newts (probably central/eastern newts) and create an aquarium that mimics their natural habitats as closely as possible Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to learning more about these amazing creatures with and from you all!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
