Depending on how bad the wound is, it should recover no problem. Do you have photos by any chance?

I can't really tell by the picture, but it doesn't look horrible. Keep it in cool, clean water and it should heal up fine as long as it's not infected.

Keep us updated.

I would seperate it from the other newts- so when you feed them the injured one doesn't try to eat, or get excited by the food.

I would also remove the mussels ASAP. Bivalves and fish are fine but amphibians tend to poke their parts in where they don't belong and sometimes with bad results.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
