Hello all.

I know Triturus karelinii is from Greece and Turkey, but does anyone know what range of temperatures and other conditions are optimal for successful breeding? Do they need a cool winter, and if so, what temperature is appropriate?

Thanks.

I kept my karelini in my basement which is 65 degrees, and during the winter it drops to about 55 degrees. This is what I believe triggered them to mine to breed, but I'm not exactly sure. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ryan. I wasn't sure if they needed a cold winter but from what you have said, obviously they don't. I'm very hopeful that mine will breed.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
