Do Axolotls see color?

Also, you guys revived a really old thread, it was from March last year
 
Nothing wrong with reviving old threads. The question is still interesting. :)

I suspect they see color. One of my stupider ones has a hard time finding food. I've been feeding them Hikari carnivore pellets that are red. He tends to get confused and snaps at the red sticker on the underside of the bare-bottom tank instead of the near-by pellets. But perhaps he is just seeing the contrast between the sicker and the black board under the tank.

If I recall correctly, and if what I read was correct, "wild type", "melanoid", and "leucistic" were original colors in the wild population and "albino" was breed in by crossing with an albino ambystoma tigrinum.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
