I have two male (the breeder said male anyway) and they're still young enough and his tail started to stay upright and the overnight his throat started to be all puffed out and it looked like when he ate he had small black dots or lumps inside his mouth and I truly have no idea what to do

It could be fluid retention which is normaly caused by infection or failure of kidney or liver. You should take your axie to the vet as soon as possible. Do you think you could post some pictures? It would help a lot :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
