I was wondering if axolotls and pleco fish make acceptable fish tank partners? Any information you have will be helpful. Thanks!

NO. There are so many horror stories on this site of species mixing disasters and plecos are a huge problem. Axies aren't very fast moving creatures normally and the plecos actually suck on the axies leaving huge gaping wounds. I am really upset by this because it's so easily fixed and the results of mixing these two resulted in some of the most hideous wounds I've seen on this site.

Nothing could be worse. There are almost no fish at all that are compatible with axolotls for very long, usually because the fish will attack the axolotls and/or the axolotl will eat the fish. Plecos are the best example of a fish that is completely wrong with axolotls. Their nature of sucking on the sides of things, especially at the bottom of aquaria, means they often severely wound axolotls if kept together. There also aren't that many species of Pleco that have the same water temperature requirements as axies. So the answer is a big no.

The only thing i have put in a tank with my axies are apple snails. I put 1 apple snail in my tank when i had just 1 axolotl. They lived together great :)

I had a dwarf plecho with mine. Then I read the horror stories! Plecho is back in the fish tank now! Maybe if my snails grow big enough? But....no.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
