Washington: Staff at the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo have euthanized a Japanese giant salamander that was suffering from liver disease and a skin infection.
The female salamander was euthanized Monday following several months of treatment. It was the only salamander at the zoo.
The Japanese giant salamander is one of the largest salamander species in the world, weighing up to 55 pounds and measuring nearly five feet long. It's listed as near threatened on the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species.
