Hello all!

I was hoping for some help identifying these Salamandra sp. I am hoping to ID them to subspecies. They were born from a WC mother (location unknown) so they should represent a genetically pure subspecies.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Ryan

P.S. First photo is mom, and second is of two babies.

I would say they are salamandra salamandra salamandra, probably from the Ukraine.

Ben

I agree they look like S.s.salamandra, and given that it appears that the Ukraine is the only european country legally exporting (or so people say...i´d personally like proof) these animals, it would make sense.

Thanks all!

I checked the "guide" prior to posting and came up with S. s. salamandra as the likely suspect. But since the guide is entirely visual with no written descriptions regarding differences to look for, I wanted to put the question to you all.

Thanks again! Much appreciated.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
