Hey guys! This is my first post on here! I’ve always found it helpful I just don’t know why I’ve never joined until now. I have attached a few pictures of my axies gills, he’s young (3-6) months and his gills look fluffy but are sticking straight up and causing some concern. Parameters are all good. Temp is good. I keep 2 axies in a 20 long with a hob and a sponge filter. Also, does it look like I have enough hides? Thanks a lot guys! I’m excited to get started here!

The gills look fine to me! It's when they are curled forward that it is a sign of stress. Your tank is really pretty, and super clean! As long as there is at least one hide per axolotl it's the right amount :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
