Help! I was given an axolotl for free a few days ago. He was brought to me with a tank full of gravel, which I replaced the next day with fine aquarium sand. But I'm fairly certain he swallowed some gravel before I even got him, because I haven't been able to get him to each much and he hasn't pooped at all since I got him. I don't know if the exotic vets in my area treat axolotls (I'm waiting on e-mail replies), and I've been fridging him since yesterday with no change. He's responsive, and moves around, but still isn't eating or pooping. I've taken a couple pictures, can anyone let me know if he's savable? The gravel was pea-sized , but he's still pretty small, and I'm afraid he won't be able to pass them. Any help is appreciated!

I've heard fridging can hel, but I don't personally have experience with impaction :( good luck.

Also might want to ask people on axolotl anonymous. Someone there will have experience.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
