Hi i'm Sam and have just recently gotten into keeping fire belly newts! I have 4 x Japanese fire bellied newts and 1 x Chinese fire bellied newt.

Does anyone have any tips for breeding?

Here are some pics

I give them cool temperatures during the winter (around 12C), and a shorter photoperiod. There are many people who breed them without an obvious winter cooling, but the photoperiod seems to be of more importance. Keep them well fed with nutricious food, especially live food like small earth worms. There are some pellets which are good as well, but getting your animals to eat them can be a challenge.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
