I use a hob aquaclear 30 for my 20 long and I really like it, it also seems to be fairly popular among users here but I did have to baffle mine with a water bottle, it fits perfectly into my screen lid feeding hole thing, I'm really interested in sponge filters though as they seem like a really efficient/cheap option, hopefully someone can advise you more on those.

I use sponge filters for all my tanks, I don't have the money for an expensive canister filter and most filters will produce heat. In a planted tank with regular water changes and daily spot cleaning, a sponge filter will be all you need, and they're very cheap, you just need an air pump for it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
