I have a fire belly newt and he is in a 10 gallon tank. i have noticed that almost every newt owner has them in a tank with water. I have water in the tank, currently at a height of about 2-3 inches should i make it higher? i noticed he really like to swim up and down. Oh and i also run a filter so i cant lower the water cause the water will not pump through.

Yes, make it higher. 1. he wants it. 2. why would you keep him in so little water when he can have so much more area to live?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
