I have seen quite a few posts on play sand being the best sand, but when you go to look for it, they either say silica free? or wax coated?

As of right now I am using bare bottom, but I want the faux plant to be stable without having to mount them.

Where do I get the best play sand?

I don't know exactly where in the US you can get it, but you are looking for sand that is used for children's sand pits.
In Australia we can get it from a local chain hardware/DIY supplies store called Bunnings. I'll post the link to what it looks like here in case that helps you https://www.bunnings.com.au/richgro-20kg-play-sand_p3022506

Google something like 'childrens play sand suppliers' and hopefully that will point you in the right direction

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
