Hey guys~

I am looking through some of my salamander books and I was curious what species of plethodontids are kept easily and are readily available?? I have kept namley ambystoma opacum/tigrium, any info on availibility or your thoughts on a hardy/easy species is much appreciated.

That's a pretty broad question. Are you looking at keeping species that are available to you locally?

No, it doesn't have to be locally, just a hardy species that I can keep to open up my horizons to different families of salamanders.

I would start with a local species if you have any large Pleths that are legal to pick up. Where are you at?

I like in Western MA, Springfield area if that helps. The only salamanders I have ever found locally are red backs(very abundant, or well used to be) and spotted salamanders. Thanks!

Most are relatively easy to keep. Probably the only issue you run into is access to the correct size food if you try keeping one of the smaller species. Watch the adds here and just quiz the seller about the care for that specific type.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
