Hi all,

Is it an early crest in this individual ? (don't know the sex btw, he's 2 years old and the cloac isn't really big and black)

Yeah, that´s a crest when it is undeveloped. 2 years is quite a lot for this species in captivity, they usually mature quite fast and have their first breeding season within the first year after morphing.

In fact, that's its second winter after morphing (effected in september 2012) exactly ;)

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
